New York Jets Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath isn’t to fond of the addition of wide receiver Plaxico Burress. Quite frankly he believes he’s just as good as Braylon Edwards, who Namath was never crazy about when he was with the Jets.
“When I see Burress, certainly in the past, and Edwards, their route running and adjusting, I didn’t like it — and I still don’t,” Namath said in interview with ESPNNewYork.com. “I’ll be surprised if Burress and (quarterback Mark) Sanchez click well and I’ll be even more surprised if Burress, after being laid off for two years and change, is going to make it through the season.”
Namath doesn’t believe Burress will be able to overcome the fact that he’s 34 years old and has spent the past two years in prison.
“It catches up to the guys who haven’t missed any time over the last two years,” said Namath. “It’s Lady Luck, and I think it will (catch up to him), given the age factor and his position.”
“We’re already talking about the feet, the ankles, the feet,” Namath continue, in he was referring to Burress’ sorained ankle that caused him to miss some time. “There’s a lot of running in a long season. I don’t see it happening.”
Despite Namath’s skepticism, he hopes for the best with Burress.
“I hope he makes All-Pro, but the realistic side of me … . The reality is, he’ll be damn lucky if he makes it through the season,” Namath said.
I believe for Namath to compare Burress to Edwards is crazy. Edwards has never shown the ability to take over a game the way Burress has in his career. Maybe Namath needs to turn on the tape of Burress man handling former Packers cornerback Al Harris in the NFL Championship back in 2007. Without that performance from Burress and the Giants don’t get to the Super Bowl.
